Moving into a new home?

Check out our top tips and tricks on how to correctly pack your household belongings.

Moving house can be an exciting time. Preparing for the move, not so exciting. The act of packing it all up can seem pretty daunting… but it doesn’t have to be stressful.

It’s not until you start moving that you realise how much stuff you actually have.

The choice is yours whether you want to do the move yourself or book a removalist. Luckily, Runaway Bay Removals has you covered. Whatever you decide.

If you’re unsure about how to find a removal company, check out our blog “How to choose a removalist”.

If you choose to do the move yourself, a smart approach is necessary. We recommend gathering packaging supplies and then going room by room until the job is done and you are ready to go.

GENERAL TIPS

Packing is the most crucial part of the moving process. Organising items makes it easier to keep track of your belongings during transport and easier to unpack when you get to your new place. We suggest following these easy tips to make your move as efficient as possible.

  • pack like items together

  • label boxes

  • pack a box of essential/must-have items

  • don’t fill boxes to the brim

  • make sure boxes are sealed properly

  • pack heavier items on the bottom and lighter items on the top

  • fill spaces with towels to prevent boxes from collapsing

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

For a successful move, you’ll need the following packaging supplies:

  • sturdy boxes

  • packing tape

  • bubble wrap

  • paper ream rolls

Runaway Bay Removals offers a wide range of the best packaging supplies as well as bundle deals to make your next home move even easier. Afterpay is also available on all products.

HOW TO PACK ROOM BY ROOM

The first step is to make an inventory of all the items you plan on taking with you. This will help you organise faster and keep track of your possessions during the move.

Next, gather all your packaging supplies you’ll need. Use the list above, as well as blankets or anything else that will protect your items during transport.

When it’s time to pack, try organising items based on function ie: pack all kitchenware together etc.

Make sure you label or colour code your moving boxes so you know exactly where everything is when you get to your new home. Mark all the boxes on the top and the side and state the contents of each box. Also note whether or not the items inside the box are fragile.

  • Don’t forget to create an additional checklist for each room with additional tasks that need to be completed. For example: in the kitchen, the refrigerator will need to be defrosted and you will need an esky for perishable goods.

PLAN FOR YOUR FIRST NIGHT

Pack a first night box for your new home including:

  • a change of clothes

  • pyjamas

  • toiletries

  • medications

  • chargers

As well as the first night bag, pack a home essentials box including:

  • bin bags

  • cleaning supplies

  • bed linen

  • bath towels

Everyone’s moving essentials will be different, read our “Moving Essentials Bag” blog to help get you started.
