Moving in wet weather
Moving in the rain is never something we plan to do. With wet weather forecast for the next few days we highlight some top tips to deal with the ran during your next move.
PROTECT YOUR BOXES
Cardboard and rain do not mix well. Wet weather and humidity can weaken your boxes and turn your beloved belongings into a puddle. To combat this you can:
Use packaging tape generously
Use sturdy boxes
Use reusable plastic boxes/storage containers
Clearly mark boxes that can not get wet (eg: electronics etc.) so removalists know to be extra careful
Contact Runaway Bay Removals for more on our wide range of affordable packaging supplies or shop them online here. We also offer Afterpay on all packaging supplies, so you can move now and pay later.
STOCK UP ON BIN BAGS
Bin bags are your friend when the weather is wet. Especially for items that aren’t too heavy.
Added bonus : they’re cheap! and you can use them inside boxes as extra protection.
WRAP EVERYTHING/ DOUBLE WRAP
The team at Runaway Bay Removals can take care of this for you. Consider shrink wrapping your mattress or getting special protectors.
PROTECT YOUR FLOORS
Lay blankets on your floors to avoid damaging your floors and carpet. With movers and helpers coming and going a lot of dirt and mud can be trapped into the house.
Use towels but be weary of using plastic or tarp as this can be very slippery especially when moving large furniture.
Prepare for your move by leaving items as close to the door as possible.
Leave a doormat where removalist can wipe their feet before entering and exiting.
With rain comes mud so make sure to hose off any mud in the driveway.
Try get to the new place before the removalists so you can lay down towels, blankets, cardboard boxes etc. and prevent unnecessary mess.
WATERPROOF VALUABLES
If something is extremely precious, don’t just trust your bin bag. Waterproofing each individual item with its own bag and plastic wrapping can guarantee your most treasured items are safe from harm.
SHORTEN CARRYING DISTANCES
Park as close to your home as possible. There’s no perfect way to protect your belongings from the rain but shortening carrying distances will prevent them from spending too much time in the rain. Try and arrange parking for the moving truck in your driveway or as close to your door as possible.
DRESS APPROPRIATELY
An umbrella is not going to help you as you need both hands. Invest in rain coats, ponchos and boots to protect yourself the best way possible.
SET UP TEMPORARY COVER
An old gazebo from your camping trips can provide cover from the door to the vehicle. If you’ve shortened your carrying distance as much as you can, some cover can make a short walk through the rain completely covered.
PRIORITISE IMPORTANT ITEMS
If you have a break in the weather, transport what you can’t afford to get wet. That could be your furniture, bedding – whatever you consider to be the most susceptible to the rain.
ASSEMBLY LINE
The more order and structure you can bring to your move, the faster it will be.
Start planning indoors which items need to be loaded first. Try and plan everything before you start carrying them, so you spend as little time as possible rearranging where things are placed in the truck.
DRY AS YOU LOAD
If boxes or furniture get wet as you load them, don’t wait to take action. Wiping boxes down with a rag or towel can save water from seeping through, or a box from slipping out your hands.
GET INSURANCE
