Moving large items

Regardless if you’re hiring professional movers, renting a removal truck or going at it solo, moving large items is never an easy task. Being prepared is key to ensuring things go as smoothly as possible.

Whether you’re moving a piano or a couch, large items requires a lot of physical labour, especially if you’re doing it alone.

There’s the risk you could damage your belongings or even worse, sustain an injury if you don’t take the proper precautions.

Follow these useful tips to save time and avoid unnecessary complications.

START PLANNING EARLY

Assess what you’ll be moving and create a plan. Make sure to make an inventory. This will give you an idea of how to go about loading items on to the truck.

DISMANTLE

If you are able to take any of the items apart, do it! This will make items easier to lift and carry. Items that can not be dismantled should be secured properly to avoid damages and injuries.

USE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT

There is a variety of tools to make moving easier. Before attempting strenuous tasks, prepare a list of moving tools you will require. If you are using a removalist, they will provide these.

Some helpful tools are:

  • Dollies

  • Sliders

  • Lifting Straps

  • Rollers

SAFETY FIRST

If you are going to be doing the heavy lifting, make sure you use the correct lifting techniques. Always lift from you legs, never from your back. Bend your knees with your back straight and use your limbs. Push items instead of pulling them. Never lift over your head and keep heavier items close to your chest.
