Moving essentials bag

One of the best pieces of moving advice is to pack an essentials bag with the items you don’t want scattered across multiple boxes and not able to find. Keeping all of your important items in one place is extremely helpful in staying organised and helps reduce stress on the day of the move.

Your bag should contain items you will need on the day of your move and potentially the days that follow. Think of it like a survival bag.

If you’ve moved before you know the first night in your new home can be nightmarish. But it doesn’t have to be if you’re prepared. Packing an essentials bag is extremely important, especially if you’re moving interstate.

A good idea is to pack a generally bag or box and then a bag for each family member. It might also be useful to pack an essentials box for each room. Keep this bag in the car with you for the duration of the move. This way everything may need is with you, just in case your removalists don’t arrive the same time you do.

Everyone’s essentials will be different but here is a short list of basic items to get you started:

Wallet & Keys

Easy to lose on a typical day, let alone in the chaos of a move. Ensure these two items are with you at all times.

Toiletries and Medications

Moving can be dirty work. Pack items you are likely to need right away like a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, contact lenses and soaps etc. Bring any prescription medications you regularly use too. Especially prescriptions that can’t be obtained easily if they get misplaced.

Change of Clothes

Think practically. Pack pyjamas, clean underwear, socks and a change of clothes. Pack something warm too! Just in case.

Important Documents

Pack important documents such as birth certificates, IDs, passports and anything else that requires safe keeping. Also pack any move-related documents you may need.

Electronics & Chargers

Your bag should include electronics you use regularly as well as charger cables. Pack your phone, laptop and any other electronics you may need.

Cleaning Supplies & Tool Kit

Dirt and dust it to be expected after moving boxes in and out of your new home. Make sure to include some basic cleaning supplies like all-purpose cleaner and some rags. Pack things like paper towels and wet wipes too!

You won’t be doing any serious repairs but there may be small things that need to be fixed right away or furniture that needs to be assembled. Bring along a small took kit with only the necessities. It’s also a good idea to pack scissors or a Stanley knife.

Snacks

Put a few snacks in your bag for when you don’t have time to eat a meal but need energy to keep going. Make sure to pack a couple bottles of water. Don’t bring things that need to be refrigerated. Opt for protein bars and packaged snacks.

Kid’s Items

If you’re moving with kids, they’re going to need their own essentials bag. This should include changes of clothes, snacks, water and something to keep them entertained.

Pet Items

Your furry friend has probably had a stressful day and confused about what is going on. Make sure to bring food, water bowls, medications, treats and their favourite toy!

Valuables

If you have valuables like expensive jewellery or anything with sentimental value, it is best to have these with you.

Last but not least. This is probably the most important and also the most forgotten. Toilet paper. Not having to wait for the removal truck to be unloaded just so you can go to the bathroom will be a major plus factor with the added stress of unpacking.

An essentials bag will make your whole moving process a lot easier. Pack the bags as you’re packing boxes by placing the important items to one side.

Don’t forget to pack something for yourself too! Reward yourself with a treat or even a glass of wine.

(Don’t forget a cork screw!)

Moving can be hard work so be sure to allow some downtime for yourself.

By following this list you should have everything you need while unpacking your new home.

Remember what you pack will depend on your personal needs. We hope this helps make your moving experience as successful as possible.
